How to Balance Your Work-From-Home Life

When you work from home, you're constantly forced to switch mentally from work mode to family mode within minutes. You need to strike a balance between your professional and personal lives, because they happen in the same place. Here are a few things to help you find that balance:

Minimize distractions. Some people say, "I could never work out of my home because I would have too many distractions." As a rule, minimize trips to the kitchen to get something to eat (except at mealtimes), don't turn on the television, and don't let yourself get sidetracked by personal activities such as cleaning the house or doing laundry.
Know when to stop working. When you work from home, you don't have far to go when you get the urge to get one more project finished. If you're single, it probably doesn't matter how long you work; but if you have a family, you'll soon hear complaints. When you stop working, really stop. Close the door to your office and concentrate on your family.
Don't eat lunch at your desk. When you take a lunch break, leave your office and eat in another part of your home. Changing your scenery and physically removing yourself from your work will help to clear your mind.
Schedule regular "dates" with your spouse and children. Block out a specific day each week to spend with your husband and your children. Go out to lunch, dinner, play games, etc. No matter what else is going on, your family will know they have that day each week.
Take at least one weekday off per month to play. At the beginning of each month, schedule a day when you're going to stay out of your office and do something else. This would be an ideal day to catch up on reading, see a movie you've wanted to see, or just enjoy the quiet. Let your voice mail take your calls. You'll find that taking a day off will prepare you for a month of productive work.
Use your office for business-related activities only. Instead of going to your office to read your favorite magazine or a good book, go somewhere else in your home. This will keep you in the mind-set that your office is for business and the rest of your home is for your personal life.
Don't use other parts of your home for business on a regular basis. If you have a favorite chair where you sit and read or watch television, don't use it for work. After a while, you won't feel that it's a place for you to relax and get away.
Include your spouse in your business. Even though you may work in unrelated fields, it's always good to get an outside point of view. Your spouse may be able to offer a solution to a problem you've had on your mind for days. Also, if your spouse understands your work and what it involves, he or she will be less likely to resent all of the hours you put into it.
If you and your spouse work together, avoid talking about business after hours. Many successful business partners are also married. They attribute their ability to work and live together to taking the focus off of their work after hours.

WHY SMALL BUSINESS FAIL TO THRIVE AND GROW

It's no secret that many small businesses fail in the first five years but the question is: Why do they fail and what can be done to prevent issues in your own business?

Here are some reasons which might help you to determine why your business isn't growing and thriving. Some of these reasons are related to learnable business skills; others relate to personal attitudes, habits or self-sabotaging belief and are not easy to change, except perhaps through coaching.

1. Mistaking a business for a hobby: Just because you love something doesn't mean you should convert it into a business. Too often businesses fail because the owner feels their passion is shared by others. Research your business idea and make sure it's viable.

2. Poor planning: Yes, you must have a business plan. It can be a simple three-page plan or a huge 40-page plan. The point is that you've looked at all the aspects of your business and are prepared to handle problems when they arise. Your business plan helps you to focus on your goals and your vision, as well as setting out plans to accomplishing them. And don't get mellow - revisit and revise your business plan annually.

3. Entrepreneurial excitement: Entrepreneurs often get excited about new ideas, but are unable to determine if they're "true opportunities" and/or put them into practice. Test every new idea against your business plan and mission statement before deciding whether to undertake it or not, and ask yourself, Do I have the time and skill to implement this?

4. Putting all your eggs in one basket: Too often, small business owners will have just one product, one service or one big client. They cling tight to this one thing because it brings in good revenue. But what if the one thing disappears? Variety and diversification will cushion you against the ebb and flow of business tides.

5. Poor record keeping and financial controls: Yes, you have to keep financial and business records, you have to review your revenue and expense report each month, and you have to file taxes and other business-related filings. If you don't know how to do these, or don't want to, get help from someone who does.

6. Lack of experience in running a business or in the industry you're entering: There are so many hats you have to wear, from marketing and selling in order to run a business effectively. On top of that, you have to understand your industry, the skills required to offer your products and services, and the trends in the industry. If you don't know about these basic skills, educate yourself. Talk to others who are successfully running their own businesses, talk to industry leaders, get a book, find a website, get a coach, do your homework. And keep increasing your business and industry skills by attending classes or reading new books every year.

7. Poor money management: You need to be able to live for one to two years without income when getting started; often businesses are very slow to get off the ground. Also, you have to create and use a realistic business budget, and not constantly drain the business income on personal spending.

8. Wrong location: If your business has a "bricks and mortar" location, you need to make sure that you are convenient to your customers, and near to your suppliers and your employees. Even something as simple as traffic patterns and parking can make or break your business.

9. Competition: Customers will go where they can find the best products and services. It's important for you to know who your competition is, what they have to offer, and what makes your own products or services better.

10. Procrastination and poor time management: Putting off tasks that you don't enjoy will sink your business faster than anything else. You can't afford to waste time on unimportant tasks while critical tasks pile up. All tasks need to be done; if you don't like to do them (or don't want to spend your time doing them), hire someone to do them for you. If your time management and prioritizing skills are rusty, hire a small business coach or take a class to help you.

11. Ineffective marketing: Learn the basics of marketing and make sure that you track the success or failure of each marketing technique you use, and then dump those that aren't working.

12. Ineffective sales techniques: Once you have a potential client, you have to know how to lead them down the sales path. If you don't understand the basics of selling, get some education on it immediately. If a selling technique doesn't work, try another one.

13. Poor customer service: Once you have a customer, you have to keep them. There are two key points here - make sure you pay attention to what the customer wants (and how these wants can change over time), and make sure you provide quick return of phone calls and emails, proper billing, win-win problem solving and an overall pleasant demeanor.

14. Entrepreneurial burnout: owning your own business requires a huge investment of time, money, energy and emotion. It's easy to work long days and forget to take time off. But in the end, this only causes burnout where your motivation and creativity will suffer, and a pessimistic attitude prevails. You'll find yourself unable to balance your business and personal life, and both will suffer. Schedule self-care time into your work week and be religious about taking time off from your business.

Family Support is Paramount

You're in business for yourself, not by yourself. Let your family be part of your growing business. Not only can family members provide support and assistance, they can also learn about business during your journey.

Although each business is unique, all businesses have hidden opportunities for an owner's spouse and/or children to get involved. Maybe your kids can stamp envelopes, hand out fliers or alphabetize folders; think about how much they would learn. Even if your husband has his own job, he can still be an integral part of your success. He may have ideas that complement yours or can help run errands or support you at your events or trade shows. The idea is to get your family involved so it truly is a family business.

So when you feel like you're all alone, remember that your family supports you every step of the way. You just need to let them know how to help and when you need it.

Amazingly, the cycle of working positive begins anew and you'll find yourself receiving even more in your business.

Your should give your mind a positive work-out, think of your mind as a muscle that needs consistent strengthening. A flabby, unfit mind simply chases whatever thought about your business that enters it--or, whatever thought someone else suggests about it, positive or negative. Your mind freezes up; that is, mental scar tissue develops and you become susceptible to whatever thought shows up. Mental surgery then becomes necessary to remove the scar tissue of those negative thoughts that moved you to behave in your business in an unhealthy manner.

It's important that we choose to do this, without resentment. It should not reflect poorly on you or your business if you create a business that is family-focused. Here are my tips so that you can continue to grow your business as you grow your family:

Create the vision and the road map of how to attain your goal.
Delegate. Outsource everything you can so that there is still progress while you are spending time with your family.
Partner up. You may be able to get twice as much done if you have a like-minded partner with the same goal.
Work smart. If you have fewer hours to work, make sure the time you do have is spent on the Most Important Things.
Get spousal support. Get buy-in from your spouse so that he helps with parenting as you grow your business.

Have You Mastered the Art of MultiTasking?

For many work-at-home moms, the art of multitasking means learning not only how to multitask but when to do so. Most work-at-home moms find themselves in some circumstances when they must multitask but also in situations when it's just not a good idea.

Learning how to multitask effectively means knowing when to multitask. Here are some tips on how and when to do it.

Combine complex mental tasks with only simple physical tasks.
Note the word simple. Driving, for example, is neither a simple nor a purely physical task, so it shouldn't be combined with other complex mental tasks. Here are a few examples of the simple-physical/complex-mental-task combo:

· Think out a multifaceted problem in the shower or while walking the dog.

· Fold laundry and talk on the phone.

· Catch up on work-related reading in the doctor's waiting room.

Respect your family and your clients/potential clients
Nothing is more annoying than talking on the phone to someone whose responses to questions are preceded by long pauses punctuated with the tapping of a keyboard. So don't be that person. Give your colleagues your full attention when you are speaking to them.
And the same goes for your family. Children of WAHMs can get the idea that you work all the time, especially if you continue to check email or talk on the phone while you are playing with them.

One of the important rules for working from home is to work when you say you will and not to work when you say you won't. Occasional work/play overlap is OK, especially if it is adding playtime that you wouldn't have had. But setting boundaries between work and home helps children understand their place in your work environment.

Stay focused.
Multitasking can lead to a scattered approach and a stack of half-finished projects. Don't let the desire to accomplish more than one thing derail you. One downside to working from home is that home has a different set of distractions than the office.

Thanks to the internet, networking has changed drastically in the last few years and made it easy for Mompreneurs and work at home moms to network, promote themselves and their ideas. Here are a couple different ways you can network.

The Old Fashioned Face-To-Face

It’s so easy to forget about the good old-fashioned “face-to-face” form of networking with all the attention that social networking gets these days. However, it’s no doubt that this way of networking is still alive and well. Although face-to-face networking can be a little bit more challenging for Mompreneurs, it is not impossible. Networking is about taking full advantage of opportunities when they arise. This doesn’t mean you need to become overly-aggressive when you have a networking opportunity in front of you, it means you need to be prepared. Have your 30-second elevator pitch and business cards ready!

You should always be ready to recruit new business and part of making those opportunities occur, of course, means placing yourself in such situations in the first place, so get out there and network!

The Digital Age

There are lots of ways you can network on the internet, but the key to successful online networking is not spreading yourself too thin. With this in mind, it is important that you don’t try and maintain a “full” presence on every single networking site available. You should selectively pick and choose the online networking options that you think best fit you and your business. For example, LinkedIn may be better than Facebook for your business or vice-versa. It all depends on your business.

The main point is to make sure that you are out there networking, whether it’s in person, online or both. Networking is all about creating the opportunities to get you, your products and/or services in front of others. Keep these facts in mind, and you will certainly see your networking success increase.

2. Establish a strong online presence: You must be present online! When was the last time you picked up a Yellow Pages to find a business? It was probably somewhere in the dark ages. Whether you consider yourself computer savvy or not, get on board with social media. As a part of this campaign, I was honored to participate in the Pay It Forward program which involved random acts of kindness for families in the community. Pampers provided me with a $50 American Express Gift Card with the opportunity to do with the gift card whatever I chose as a way of giving back to local families.

I decided to use the $50 gift card to purchase baby supplies and donate them to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a local hospital. My hospital of choice was Prince George's County Hospital. I chose the NICU because my firstborn child was born as a preemie, 11 weeks early, and spent over one month in the NICU, so this is near and dear to my heart. Although my daughter spent a little over one month in the NICU there are babies who spend six months or longer in the NICU and are cared for with the greatest love and attention by the Nurses every day. So, my Pay It Forward idea was to provide three care packages for parents whose child is in the NICU. The care packages included: newborn pampers, baby wipes, powder, lotion, and an infant nail care set. I hand-delivered the care packages to the Prince George's Hospital NICU this evening and the response from the Charge Nurse of the NICU was truly touching. In fact, her positive response and appreciation was so moving that it made me want to do more... a LOT more... on my own as an extension of this campaign. It also spoke volumes to me about what people really value. Sometimes we think we have to spend a lot of money to make a difference but this campaign taught me just the opposite. We can perform small random acts of kindness and make just as much of an impact!

As an entrepreneur who has experienced tremendous growth in my business over the past two years, one of the most critical lessons I have learned in business is to ADD value first before I ever expect to receive value. Exactly what does it mean to add value first? It means to always offer some type of benefit to others before you expect them to ever want to do business with you! I have attended countless business networking events and all too often walk away with 75% of the new contacts simply wanting to sell me something. They introduce themselves and immediately begin talking about how great their products or services are and why I need to buy them. Or they call me the very next day and want to "meet for lunch" so they can tell me how drastically their products/services can benefit me... all with a price tag, of course! Hint: Most people tire of the constant "sales pitch" when networking and it becomes an immediate TURN-OFF. Too often, entrepreneurs fail to remember that their products/services can likely be purchased anywhere by any number of suppliers offering the same or similar products/services. So, makes a person buy from you and want to begin adding value to your business? It is ONLY when you begin dealing with people authentically and on a personal level rather than a vantage point of always making a quick sale. Clients are gained from relationships that begin as a result of likeability, trust, and mutual respect. One of the best ways to earn such trust and respect is to demonstrate that you're not just looking for a quick sale, but rather to develop relationships and partnerships that are mutually beneficial and lasting. Add value first by making a connection for the person or, perhaps, sending them valuable information about an opportunity for their business. But, most importantly, make them feel special by paying attention to what they do and expressing a sincere interest in ways you can benefit their business. In turn, the value you receive will be insurmountable.

Share a little piece of you with the world

So, you have a story to tell... you've been contemplating writing your book but lose sleep over the very idea of embarking on such a big project and have no idea where to start? Allow me to begin by stating that I was in your shoes a little over one year ago. There was a piece of me I desperately wanted to share with the world in written format but I assumed it would take me two or three years to complete such an intensive project. The "lack of knowledge" about what it actually required to publish a book prevented me from pressing forward with my project for over a year. Until, I finally met a young lady who was already an author and encouraged me to just do it! I took her advice and got to work.

The first thing I did was to format my thoughts into an electronic document in Microsoft Word. Everyday, I added more thoughts and began to formulate the thoughts into chapters. Each day as I composed a new paragraph or chapter title I added it to my electronic manuscript. Slowly, but surely, I could see all the pieces starting to come together. So, my first bit of advice is just as it was given to me: GET STARTED. You have a story to tell and someone is waiting to benefit from your story so avoid procrastinating any longer. Get started today. All the pieces do not have to fit together at this very moment. In fact, you might be clueless as to the chapter titles or even the title of the book itself but start typing anyway. I recommend typing your beginning manuscript instead of writing it because it makes the task of completing the book much less daunting when you already have your ideas formatted and transferred from paper instead of waiting to do that at the very conclusion of the project and then it appears overwhelming. As you continue on this path, in a few months you will likely have chapters and those chapters lead to a completed, formulated book.

As it relates to publishing, I personally chose to self-publish my first book (http://www.momsrthebest.net/p/book.html). It offered me the freedom to publish what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it without intervention. And, unlike the popular belief that it will cost you an arm and a leg to self-publish, if you use a company such as InstantPublisher (http://www.instantpublisher.com/) you can print as little as 10 books at a time. Over the past year I have had the pleasure of meeting and connecting with scores of women entrepreneurs who are demonstrating that balance CAN be achieved in their businesses despite juggling the many other hats they wear including mother, wife, aunt, grandmom, sister, daughter, friend, employee, and other roles. As I continue to meet and connect with these women entrepreneurs who are striving to be their best and reach their full potential in life and business, I often ask them for tips on achieving balance. Below are the top three balancing tips provided from some of the most successful women entrepreneurs:

1. Don't be afraid to UNPLUG. When you're feeling overwhelmed or like you're falling short of achieving the balance you want, take the time necessary to regroup, refocus, and reenergize in order to remain productive in your business. Recognizing when to unplug is crucial for remaining at your optimal level in operating your business.

2. Avoid trying to be a perfectionist. Be GREAT at what you do but learn to avoid spending overextended hours working on business projects simply because you want it to be perfect. Learn to recognize when "good enough is good enough" and when it is time to bring a project to closure.

3. Ask for help when you need it. Every woman and woman entrepreneur attempts to be SUPERWOMAN, but in many instances it just makes sense to enlist the help of others whether it be the help of close friends or family to assist with getting it all done. Oftentimes, women are looked at as being SUPERWOMAN because we behave that way instead of speaking up and asking for assistance.

Q. What is a mom on a mission and what is the mission you want moms to accept?

A mom on a mission is the everyday mom/woman who has decided that she wants the best out of life and that she will not allow anything or anyone to come in her way of pursuing her passion and fulfilling her dreams. She is always looking to create new opportunities for herself and her family. She is confident and determined. In being a Mom on a Mission, I want moms to accept that they are great, deserve everything that life has to offer, and that the sky is the limit. To just believe and focus.

Q. What prompted you to host the 1st Annual Moms on a Mission Conference?
The 1st annual Moms On A Mission Conference was developed for the mom and the woman who wants more. It was a created for moms/women to be empowered, encouraged, and educated. The MOAM Conference vision is to provide resources for mothers and women in the communities to help them to create a plan of action, become motivated and begin on their way of fulfilling thier mission.

Q. What was your thought process for enlisting the speakers you wanted to participate in this event? Was there something specific you were looking for as it related to what you wanted the attendees to take away from the event?
In my vision of the MOAM Conference, I carefully selected speakers that would be of motivation and encouragement to mothers and women in our communities. I wanted women who had a WOW Factor and had a story to tell. The speakers had to be able to connect and be well received with the everyday moms and women who attended the conference. I wanted the attendees of the conference to come away with a fiery drive of success.

Q. The Moms on a Mission Conference came about as a result of all you have been accomplishing through your company, 24hrmom. So, what is your mission & vision for the future of 24hrmom?
My vision for The 24hrmom & Co., is to provide more available resources to the moms and women in our communities through conferences, workshops, and meet-up events. I believe that all mothers/women have a purpose on this earth that needs tapping into. It is my vision to expand 24hrmom to the next level by authoring a book, providing a city to city tour of the Moms On A Mission Conference and taking The 24hrmom Radio Show to the next level. Everyday is a learning opportunity but I realize it I takes one day at a time and that if I have touch one person to get on her mission then my job is done.

Q. How do you define a woman of excellence?
A women of excellence fears God, takes care of her family, she has a vision and is determined. She is AWESOME, which stands for always, willing, excited, supportive, overachieving, motivated, and extraordinary.

Q. What made you want to host this 1st annual gala event?
God told me to hold this event about two years ago while in deep transformation. I was afraid. When I decided enough was enough, I wanted to show women what God had done to me. He changed my life. I wanted women to know no matter your circumstance, you can live the life you want to live through God today.

Q. Where did you find the women of excellence who you wanted to honor -- family? church? community? were they nominated?
Six of the women I honored came from my church and two were my best friends. They all were nominated and given a personalized gift. Simply because they made a difference in my life.

Q. Tell me a little about your process for selecting the participants (speakers & entertainers) you wanted to be involved in the event? What made you chose these specific individuals?
Cheryl, let me tell you. I said “God you want me to hold this event, but I don’t know the first thing about hiring a speaker or anything else”. Then everything just happened. I did not have to put any effort at all into the speakers or entertainers. God had everything planned and he worked it out. He put certain people in place in my life. I met you and Terrell through Lanitra. I met the guest speaker through a lady at church. Xavier was last minute because someone canceled. He truly was God sent. The praise dancers are my praise dance sisters from church. And everything else just fell into place. All the wonderful people God has placed in my life is for a reason. He handed all my speakers and entertainers right to me. The only person I searched for was Platinum, the comedian. I googled a Christian comedian, looked at my options and was drawn to her. I watched her video and the rest is history.

Q. Going forward, what is your mission & vision for the future women of excellence gala's?
My mission for the future Women of Excellence Gala’s is to establish long term relationships with women who make a difference and to work along side with them providing awareness, and information that will empower other women to do something with their lives right now, which will provide a platform for our young women to follow. If at least one person is touched, through God, I would have done something. My vision is to make this a national gala where women come from all walks of life and all over the world to be empowered, uplifted, and inspired to go out there and do whatever it is that they want to do, no matter what their circumstance is.

There is no greater joy for a womanpreneur who is working diligently to transform her life than to connect with other positive, like-minded womenpreneurs who are on a similar path or have achieved the success that one is aspiring to. Today was yet another AMAZING day in my world of now being a full-time entrepreneur. My day started with a guest appearance on the "author spotlight" segment of Praise In The City 104.1FM hosted by the dynamic, Award Winning News and Community Affairs Director, Sheila Stewart, of Radio One (http://praisedc.com/locals/sheilastewart/join-sheila-stewart-for-a-new-public-affairs-talk-show-called-praise-in-the-city/). The show addresses pertinent issues of concern on a local, state, and national level in the African American community. The interview allowed me an opportunity to have an interchange of uplifting dialogue with this amazing community activist who hosts and participates in a wide array of positive initiatives for the community. It was an honor to meet Ms. Stewart and to share her space for a short time this morning.

Immediately following the interview on Radio One, I attended the Women of Prince George's Roundtable hosted by AC Pollard Event Staffing (http://acpollard.com/) with featured speaker, Doreen Rainey (http://doreenrainey.com/) at the Hampton Inn, Largo MD. This event allowed me to connect, network, and begin building relationships with women on a similar mission to live their best lives now and in the words of Ms. Rainey, "to live radically."

Minority Women-Owned Business Forum - a HUGE success!

Today, I attended the "Minority Women-Owned Business Forum: The Trailblazers of our Economy" hosted by Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (http://donnaedwards.house.gov/) at the Rayburn Building on Capital Hill in Washington, DC (http://www.aoc.gov/cc/cobs/rhob.cfm). The event was a HUGE success with standing room only. There was such a diverse group of women who attended this ground-breaking event, some aspiring business owners and others who have been in business for over 10 years. Tthe line-up of guest speakers and panelists was dynamic. Guest speakers included Michelle Ebanks, President of Essence Communications (http://www.essence.com/bios/michelle_ebanks.php), Dana Lewis, Executive Director of the National Women's Business Council (http://www.nwbc.gov/aboutus/DANA_LEWIS_BIO.html), Ana Recio Havey, Asst. Administrator of the Office of Women's Business Ownership (http://archive.sba.gov/idc/groups/public/documents/sba_program_office/sba_women_bus_ownership.pdf), and more!

I networked, connected, and began building relationships from the moment I walked in the door at the event. I remained in awe for the entire event as valuable information, strategies, and tips continued to be disseminated so that every person in the room could begin taking their business to the next level. But it didn't stop there. After the Forum had concluded I even had the pleasure of going to lunch with one of the guest panelists, Lynn Cooper, Managing Partner of Socially Ahead (http://www.sociallyahead.com/), and five other women attendees. We each agreed that this Forum was one of a kind!

Mompreneur Continues Book Signings as part of B.A.D. Women Tour

I believe any woman or mom can achieve her dreams. And I'm thrilled to have achieved one of my biggest dreams of becoming an author. On January 2, 2011 I launched my first self-published title, How I Flatlined and Woke Up in 45 Days - A Guide to Empowered Living, and sold over 200 copies of the book in under 60 days. I am continuing to promote this book which contains a 45-day empowerment guide for every woman and mom to follow in an effort to create a positive mindset as she pursues her passion in life and steps fully into her purpose. As a mom who recently walked away from corporate America in order to pursue my passion and exert my time and effort into growing my small business, Moms R The Best, I've quickly learned the valuable lesson of spending less and taking advantage of sales. Approximately one week ago, after listening to my 3-year-old scream and holler first thing in the morning because I had opened the car door instead of allowing him to open the door for himself, and after dropping off my three little ones at school on opposite sides of town, I decided to go and enjoy a "well deserved" (if I must say so myself) early morning treat -- quiet time at the bookstore along with a soothing mocha and fattening glazed doughnut. Naturally, I had a certain measure of guilt -- no, not about the caloric intake of the mocha and the doughnut -- but in realizing that I shouldn't have been wasting money on personal indulgences. However, I quickly reminded myself that everyone needs a little guilty pleasure every once in a while, even moms. So, I stepped up to the counter at my local Borders Bookstore and ordered my mocha latte with whipped cream and a glazed doughnut. I pulled out my purse to pay for my mommy pleasure and the barista tells me that my total is $0.48. Yep, you read that correctly -- only $0.48. It appears that all my book purchases in the months prior, to continue growing in knowledge in my desire to take my business to the next level, had earned me an unexpected BONUS! I had earned $5.00 in bonus dollars at Borders Bookstore and was able to guiltlessly enjoy my special morning treat for less than fifty cents. What more could a busy mom on a budget ask for!

On Sunday, January 2, 2011 a historical event took place at Critique Boutique at the National Harbor. Two empowered women entrepreneurs collaborated to celebrate major achievements in their entrepreneurial journeys. Confessions Of A Mommy's Day Off

The other day I was home for a rare mommy day off and I must make a few confessions:

1. I forgot how blissful it is to sleep past 5:00am

2. I was WAY more excited than I probably should have been to drop-off my kids at school ON TIME

3. I never realized Panera Bread opens at 6am and by 9am has a full-house of customers...but the bread is so yummy that I decided to join the line

4. Enjoying fresh French bread with Country Crock butter spread across it was my sinful pleasure for the day

5. I'm usually the person rushing on the beltway to get to my destination but on this day I had a nerve to be appalled that drivers were "pushing me down the beltway" considering I had absolutely NO WHERE to go (LOL)

6. I completely forgot that the day goes twice as fast when you have a day off versus when you're stuck in a cubicle for 8-hours a day

7. WOW, so that's what it feels like to have dinner prepared by 4pm, to pick-up the kids early, and have them bathed and settled by 7pm instead of walking in the door at 7pm!

Cheryl Wood, Founder & CEO of Moms R The Best was proud to team up with the Kentland Girl Scouts Troop (http://www.girlscouts.org/) to host a Young Girls Entrepreneurship Workshop for girls ages 5-18 on Saturday, November 20th at the Hampton Inn in Largo, MD. The event exceeded the expectations of everyone involved. Our anticipated numbers were 50 girls but we had 99 registered girls with a wait list of 25 additional girls.

The Workshop, appropriately titled: "Creating My Own Destiny: Thinking BIG & Achieving BIG, featured some DYNAMIC women entrepreneurs who came to provide empowerment and motivation for the young attendees. The range of women entrepreneurs with a variety of businesses was truly inspiring. The speakers included: Kristy Johnson, Editor-in-Chief of Shepreneur Magazine who has featured individuals such as Kimora Lee Simmons and Serena Williams in her magazine and has a featured magazine article with Donald Trump; Shawn Mason Spence, Actress & Comedian who has been featured throughout DC/MD/VA as one of few women comedians who only offers clean sets without profanity or vulgarity; Kimberly Hollingsworth, Founder of Even the Score which is a company offering parties and get-togethers to teach sports to women; Gabrielle Williams, Founder of Jewelz of Jordan, our youngest entrepreneur (10-years-old) who has a custom jewelry company; Sherron Phillips, Owner/Creative Director of P3Solution which offers event planning, web design, and a host of other multimedia services; and Sophie Ford, Founder of Girlz of Grace which teaches young girls all about etiquette.

The speakers highlighted the need for girls to think outside the box, dream big, have confidence in their abilities, and work hard to achieve their dreams. Furthermore, there was a special portion of the Workshop dedicated to having the girls create their own Vision Boards which they enjoyed very much.

Moms R The Best asks "How do moms do it all?"

As a full-time working mother of three sometimes I don't even know how I get it all done. My mornings start at 5:00am, I'm not back home until 7pm only to have a full load of mommy duties to get done after working my full-time job. The evenings in my household are packed with giving baths, cooking dinner, and getting homework done so the little ones can attempt to be in bed by 8:30pm. Don't even talk about any quality time during the weekday. But that's the sacrifice that so many working moms make. If it takes every breath in my body I promise myself that I will make a life change and offer more of myself to my beautiful children who are so deserving, and I will help other moms to create a life of balance!

This week is definitely one of those weeks when I am asking the question, "how do moms do it all?" I will facilitate an SBA Workshop on entrepreneurship on Thursday, host the Common Threads Networking Event on Saturday, and host my son's 3rd birthday party on Sunday. Whewwww, I'm tired just thinking about it. But it has to be done so instead of whining I create a plan of action and go for it... just like so many other moms. KUDOS TO ALL THE MOMS!

Although I am the Founder & CEO of Moms R The Best, a local Maryland business that has been gaining maximum exposure over the past year I stand firm in my belief that nothing deserves more time and more attention than my children. Granted, rearing three young children in today's society is more challenging than any job I could have or business I could run, but the joys also outweigh any other joy. My three children -- 2-years-old, 3-years-old, and 6-years-old -- are the best thing that ever happened to me. And when I get stressed with the everyday challenges of life I take a step back, take a deep breath, and go to my kids for a good laugh so that I remain grounded and never take life too seriously. Because no amount of success, no amount of failure, no amount of doubts, fears, challenges or stress in life can take away the love between me and my children. This evening, I decided to take the three little ones out to eat pizza as a special treat on a Sunday evening and they were elated. The photos below demonstrate the moments that every mom cherises forever!

Common Threads Networking Event to Benefit Tigerlily Foundation and Honor Women in Philanthropy and Small Business, October 23 in Largo, Maryland

(Largo, Maryland) – Join Moms R The Best for its entrepreneurial and business networking event, “Common Threads,” on October 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hampton Inn in Largo, Maryland located at 9421 Largo Drive West. Common Threads will honor four amazing and inspirational businesswomen, including breast cancer survivor and Tigerlily Foundation Founder Maimah Karmo; Philanthropist and President of POSH Couture Jewell Green; Journalist and Host of “At Home With Victoria,” Victoria Gaither; and Founder of the foster care support organization Blessed Haven, Inc. Danielle Jennings. Several small business owners will be showcasing and selling their products. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Tigerlily Foundation.

Moms R The Best Founder Cheryl Wood envisioned Common Threads as a way for entrepreneurs to expand their networks, while supporting an important cause. “I have been in business for the past year, and I’ve realized the importance of building relationships and networking with like-minded people. This event is about providing a platform for local business owners and professionals to connect and also an opportunity to support the Tigerlily Foundation, which helps hundreds of young women with breast cancer,” said Mrs. Wood.

The Honorees

Maimah Karmo is a fearless breast cancer survivor and advocate who launched the Tigerlily Foundation while undergoing chemotherapy. Maimah was diagnosed at 32-years-old and through Tigerlily, she focuses on prevention and support for young women before, during and after breast cancer. Maimah and the Tigerlily Foundation have made a huge impact for thousands of women.

Jewell Green is a philanthropist and founder of POSH Couture and POSH GiRL Events. Mrs. Green is also the wife of Pro-Football Hall of Fame Member Darrell Green, and leverages each of her roles to serve various non-profits, including the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation, Tigerlily Foundation, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen and others. Her leadership and support is a great benefit for many small business owners throughout the Washington area and nationwide.

Danielle Jennings is a former ward of the state. After aging out of the system in 2000 and observing the issues that other foster friends encountered she was concerned that the lack of support was a major problem within the system. In 2007 after speaking with other concerned youth and influential adults, the concept for Blessed Haven Inc. was born.

Victoria Gaither is a broadcast journalist and former anchor with WMAR-TV in Baltimore and other stations. As a "new" business owner being in business a little over one year I never imagined the recognition and accolades I would receive for simply overcoming my fears and taking the necessary steps to pursue my passion and purpose in life. The joy of doing something I love is satisfaction in itself, but to have others recognize my efforts is priceless. This weekend, attending and participating in the W.O.M.E.N. (Women Owned & Managed Enterprise Network) Conference at Morgan State University, was one of the most phenomenal weekends I have experienced since starting Moms R The Best. Not only was I honored as the recipient of the 2010 Alice Muhammad Entrepreneurial Spirit Award but I was also privileged to present a workshop at the Conference. My workshop title was "Mompreneurs: Generating Revenue While Balancing Family Life. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and connecting with so many positive, focused, and outgoing women who find joy in uplifting and encouraging others.

Today, while riding the metro home from work I took advantage of the time by reading an e-book that was sent to me for review from Stacey McSwine, President of The Mommy Resource Network (http://www.mommyresourcenetwork.com/). The e-book is titled "Single Mommy Resources - 6 Steps to Living Your Best Life NOW." As I read the first few pages of the book I immediately knew it was a phenomenal source of information simplified as a quick-read for busy moms. The book focuses its attention primarily on single moms but is a MUST READ for all women and moms who want to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives by discovering the life they were born to live. The book touches on topics of completion, friendships, and giving back to name a few. There were several quotes in the book I associated with on a personal level and really took to heart:
